Ubisoft, creators of such games as Prince of Persia, is, believe it or not, opening a movie studio. And for their first project...Assasin's Creed! Generally speaking, movies based on games (and vice versa) are crap. But, I must say, there isn't a whole lot of other games that would make a cooler movie than Assasin's Creed. Ok, well there are some (IE: Halo), but still.

No details or release date or anything on the movie, or even when it goes into production. All we know is that its a adaptation, or has somthing to do with Assasin's Creed, and that the movie studio will be based in Montreal.

So why Montreal (not that it matters)... well, word is that they are doing it there because of a big tax break they would be getting. Can't blame them really. Besides, they will be creating tons of jobs there, so the province of Montreal is all happy about it. Heres what the press release has to say about it:

The company’s top executives announced the plan this month in Canada, with much of the Quebec political establishment there to celebrate the news that Ubisoft was poised to create 1,400 jobs in the province by 2013, including 500 for a new film studio. In return, the local and federal governments promised subsidies including $19 million for tax credits and job training plus an $8 million loan for the studio.

“We want our universe to be respected,” said Emmanuel Carré, a company spokesman. “Too often, the movies made from video games don’t respect the characters. The producers want to make a mainstream movie, but if the fans decide it’s not good, the movie won’t be a success. With our new studio, the same people making the games will be working closely with the people making the films.”

Kudos to Ubisoft. Rather than hand over their franchise to some crappy movie studio, they just make their own. More money to them, better movie for us... or at least we hope.

*update* Aparantly, their "movie" will only be roughly 8 minutes long. How disapointing. Maybe if it's succesfull they will make the jump and go for a full length feature film.
