Since launch week sales of the PlayStation 3 in Europe have dropped significantly. Retailers have been surprised by the poor sales of the console last week with many people ignoring the next-generation console’s existence.
Many retailers in the UK are already cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 in order to try and spark sales and regain money that they put out for the stock of the Sony cosnole.
Some high-profile UK retail locations have reduced the price of the PlayStation 3 to £399.99. Uk retail locations like Play.com are going as far as offering deals on top of the lower price which include an HDMI cable as well as a Blu-ray movie, The Click. For the moment retailers have no timetable as to how long they will have this price cut go on for so for now it appears that this could be a long-term thing.
The sales of the PS3 dropped 82% since its launch and consumers who went out and purchase the console on day 1 are now getting problems as they paid more money for a console just because they were loyal consumers and purchased it on launch day.
Retailers are taking £25 off of the suggested retail price. To this point even though there is no official Sony price cut, it appears that the price will spread to other retailers in order to compete with one another. One week and the price of the PlayStation 3 is already lower, if that is not a bad sign for the console and Sony’s future with the PlayStation brand, then nothing is. All of the bad press in the world does not match up to Sony not making as much money off of their console. It is all about the sales and the user base and if those two things do not come then Sony as well as the retailers will have a shaky partnership this generation.
It's seems to me that if the price drop stays retailers may only stock small numbers of PS3's, if stocking them at all. But, only time will tell.Tags
