After several weeks of being in a public beta, The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar has finally been launched and is currently available here in the new world (aka, North America). LotRO is the first ever MMORPG based upon the incredibly popular Lord of the RIngs books (and movies).

Shadows of Angmar will have you grinding across Middle Earth. All the way from the Shire to Angmar (The Witch King's kingdom). The game has a very similar concept and very similar gameplay elements to World of Warcraft, but, obviously, set in the Lord of the Rings universe.

Here is what Turbine (the developers) have to say about the release of LotRO:

"The release of The Lord of the Rings Online marks a momentous occasion for MMO gamers and Tolkien fans around the world," said Jeff Anderson, president and CEO of Turbine, Inc. "Countless adventures await gamers eager to experience Middle-earth in an entirely new way and we're confident that once they've visited this epic world, they'll never want to leave."

"The Lord of the Rings franchise, with its incredibly rich history and extensive fan base, lends itself perfectly to the MMO genre," said Steve Allison, chief marketing officer, Midway. "We're thrilled to be able to partner with Turbine to bring The Lord of the Rings Online to North American gamers looking for a way to experience the world of Middle-earth like never before."

Additionally, Turbine has also anounced an upcomming update (already!) to LotRO. The update is called "Shores of Evendim", and will be available this june. The update will include an entire new region to explore, 60 new quests, 9 new monsters, a new raid and some general game enhancments. Best of all, it will be completely free! It is definately good to see that they are offering this free extra content.
