Mark Cale, the CEO of System 3 (Developer of some classic Commodore 64 and Amiga games) has been making remarks that basically say Nintendo will be launching their own online "marketplace", seperate from the Virtual Console, in order to compete with Microsoft and their Xbox Live Marketplace.
Cale has hinted that one of System 3s games, Impossible Mission, will be available not only in retail, but also through a new online service that Nintendo is supposadly launching within the next few months."...we're going to be exploring what Nintendo can actually do in terms of downloadable content, and see if it can match Xbox Live," says Mark.
I suppose this may resolve the mystery surrounding how Nintendo will deal with downloadable content other than new Wii software and oldschool games. It seems that they may be launching an entirely new service, rather than just expanding the Virtual Console. "I wouldn't say Virtual Console, because they're not actually calling it the Virtual Console, but in the next few months there will be various announcements I'm sure made by Nintendo that will offer users a system that will be similar to that of what Microsoft is offering at present, which is the ability to download content," he explained.
He also added, "Microsoft are years ahead of the other two major players in that regard. It really depends on when Nintendo are rolling out their strategy, which I expect will be within the next two months. At the moment we are focused on the retail launch and when Nintendo open up their services, what we've done is that we've made a commitment to try and make sure that the product is going to be one of the first products that can independently be brought away from the Virtual Console."
Keep in mind that this is just a rumour comming from a 3rd party developer, and should in no way be assumed as true. However, it would be cool if Nintendo added a new channel or a new section to the Wii Shop Channel that dealt with downloadable content for games, and maybe even downloadable demos and full Wii games.
