After the phone with iTunes failed, many people started to discuss the possibility of Apple creating their own phone instead of letting a phone maker (Motorola, LG, etc) make the phone. This way Apple could use their designers, their programmers, their innovative minds to create one mega phone.

Many people dismissed the idea as a Mac enthusiasts' day dream that would never come to fruit.  The Apple phone talk died down and was put on the back burner.  A year went by and out of no where talk of this Apple made cellular phone popped up again.  More speculation, mock-ups, sites began posting stories with "leaked info".  The Apple community went crazy.

I'm sure your thinking: " I thought this was about the iPhone killer?"  Well, it is because as soon as the Internet exploded about the unannounced iPhone, phone makers started to freak out.  They started to develop this "iPhone killer"

This phone was still a rumor. Yet many phone manufacturers started to worry about it.  This is the main reason  these "iphone killers" will fail.

When ever you try to counter a product with a product of your own, you usually fail.  Why? because you are trying to copy something someone has already done, so your ideas come off as old/non-innovative/tacky/etc.  In order to survive the iPhone, you need to create something that is completely different than the iPhone. Why? See my next point.

    * You have to create something completely different because the iPhone has two things other phones will never have.
  • OSX - With a full blown Unix OS, the possibility of applications are astounding. Desktop quality apps at your fingertips.
  • iPod - Yes other phones play music but do they have the most popular music device on the planet? This phone will be the only phone to have wide screen iPod functionality and  play songs purchased from the iTunes music store; you know, the ones that won't play on any other music player (besides those useless Motorola phones with iTunes...).

Why are phone makers even bothering with a iPhone killer.  Why can't they do something innovative that would revolutionize the mobile industry?   This is a huge wake-up call! They need to shape up or ship out.  It bothers me that it takes a single company to upend the cellular phone industry with a single product that has yet to be released.

I'm grateful for companies like Apple that take risks in order to bring something to market that will hopeful change things for the better.  The iPhone may be a huge failure or it may be a huge success (I'm betting on the latter).  Either way, in order to "kill" this unreleased product, come up with something better instead of a regurgitated idea.

I agree! These companies need to stop playing catch-up and start taking the lead. Although because of this lag in innovation we get great Apple products!
