In a recent update to their official FAQ for the Wii ,Nintendo has hinted at possible DVD/CD playback support in post-2006 consoles.

From the FAQ: Q: Can the Wii console playback music CDs and DVDs? A: The Wii console released in the end of 2006 does not have the feature to playback music CDs or DVDs.

While this could simply mean "Our console - which released at the end of 2006 - cannot play DVDs and CDs", it does sound sort of suspicious don't you think?
