Altered Beast has you play a centurion brought back to life by Zeus in order to rescue his daughter Athena, like many games of this genre it drops you right in it, bad guys coming at you from left and right (its 2d what do you expect) and you have no idea what the controls are yet. the games rather basic, it only lets you move right (and a little bit left), there are no other areas to access apart from the set path given to you.
I still love this game, for the simple idea of turning into beasts, everytime you collect and orb your character gets a little bit stronger and looks a little bit more butch. Once you get three or four of them, you transform, into a beast, and its awesome. Each beast has a diffirent ability, and you need that for the final boss, there are only five levels and you can only transform into a certain beast in each level, the bosses are built around them so it's rather handy.
The graphics are pretty good, but so are alot of genesis games of its time, the only thing that made this game as great as it was is the beasts, although i do like being able to kick up, it helps alot in this game. I would rate this game lower if the beast part was more of a gimmick, but its really not, the game was built around being able to turn into beasts with cool powers, the name says so. The fact thats its five levels long does sound rather short, but it has alot of replay value, and you can't beat a good 2 player game of this.
