Dead rising will remind you of the film dawn of the dead at first, for the simple fact that your in a mall full of zombies. Thats about the only similarity, i'm gussing capcom were still a little worried and decided to put "This game was not developed, approved or licensed by the owners or creators of George A. Romero's dawn of the dead" on the cover to try and stop anyone from sueing them.
This game is fun, it drops you in a giant shopping centre full of zombies, then says "do what you want" by giving you a thousand (not actual number of items) diffirent items to use as a weapon. It doesn't take itself to seriously, it gives you a simple movie like storyline, zombies, and fun ways to kill them, but thats all you really want. Of course theres still work to do, you get dropped into a mall via helicopter and have to be on the roof in three days. What you do with these days is up to you, kind of, there are case missions to help push the story along, meaning you have to be in a certain place at a certain time, the game clock makes it so two hours is a day, so the game will end in six hours. Apart from that, you may do as you please, theres a janitor that gives you a walkie-talkie who helps you by telling you where there are survivors, if you wish you may go help them to get achievements or some nifty stuff (one being a shortcut behind a mirror taking you to the other side of the mall)
There are also some boss battles, that come in the form of psychopaths who have gone crazy over watching the people around them be eaten by zombies, there all rather hard and some are unavoidable if you wish to finish the story. The gameplay is great, theres a 10-15 minute learning curve but after that your sorted. The sound is perfect, everything sounds how you think it would sound if you was using it against a zombie, theres not a thing they got wrong here. Theres one part of the game you will probly forget to do, take pictures, seen as your a photo journalist thats part of your job, but you rarely think "that would be a nice picture" and end up forgetting this at times. Frank starts off rather weak, but as you progress you begin to get PP (player points im guessing) that levels you up, taking photos, killing zombies and so on helps you with that. The more you level up the more items you can carry or the more hits you can take, you also get some new moves to use in hand to hand combat if your ever stuck without a weapon.
The storyline is the type you would see in a movie, the government cause a zombie outbreak and try to cover it up by blocking off the town, if this was turned into a movie, i wouldn't be shocked, it would work perfectly. There are diffirent outfits you can get within the game, so if you wish to walk around dressed as a camp scout with a teddy bear head, go for it, all the outfits carry into cutscenes aswell, so the ones that are ment to be dramatic, kind of lose that when the dying man is saying his last words to a giant bear in a suit. It can get rather repetative, most of the time you will be going out to save people, and when you get case missions, there normaly saving people or collecting a certain item to, theres not much diffirence here. After getting the True ending they give you infinity mode, all that does is let you live for as long as possible, doing whatever you want, with no places to be or people to save. This game is fun, thats all there is to it, if you want to have fun and kill some zombies, go for it.
